Evaluating approximate flavor instability metrics in neutron star mergers

چکیده
Neutrinos can rapidly change flavor in the inner dense regions of core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers due to neutrino fast instability. If amount transformation is significant, FFI could significantly affect how explode enrich universe with heavy elements. Since many state art supernova merger simulations rely on transport algorithms based angular moments radiation field, there incomplete information which determine if distributions are unstable FFI. In this work we test performance several proposed moment-based instability tests literature. We perform time-independent general relativistic a snapshot 3D simulation generate reasonable check where each these criteria correctly predict addition, offer new ``maximum entropy'' that somewhat more complex, but offers detailed (though still approximate) estimates ELN crossing width depth. find maximum entropy resonant trajectory particularly accurate at predicting snapshot, though all significant most likely.

Binary Neutron Star Mergers
We review the current status of studies of the coalescence of binary neutron star systems. We begin with a discussion of the formation channels of merging binaries and we discuss the most recent theoretical predictions for merger rates. Next, we turn to the quasi-equilibrium formalisms that are used to study binaries prior to the merger phase and to generate initial data for fully dynamical sim...
متن کاملHydrodynamics of Neutron Star Mergers
The final burst of gravitational radiation emitted by coalescing binary neutron stars carries direct information about the neutron star fluid, and, in particular, about the equation of state of nuclear matter at extreme densities. The final merger may also be accompanied by a detectable electromagnetic signal, such as a gamma-ray burst. In this paper, we summarize the results of theoretical wor...
متن کاملMass ejection in neutron star mergers
We present the results of 3D Newtonian SPH simulations of the merger of a neutron star binary. The microscopic properties of matter are described by the physical equation of state of Lattimer and Swesty (LS-EOS). To check the model dependence of the results we vary the resolution (∼ 21000 and ∼ 50000 particles), the equation of state (stiff and soft polytropes), the artificial viscosity scheme,...
متن کاملGamma-ray Bursts and Neutron-star Mergers
We present the discovery observations for the optical counterpart of the γ-ray burster GRB 970508 and an analysis of its light curve and of the HST imaging data. We also present a detailed analysis of the HST images claimed to show a proper motion of the optical counterpart of GRB 970228 and conclude that, within the uncertainties, there is no proper motion. We examine several aspects of the ne...
متن کاملThe Fate of Neutron Star Binary Mergers
Following merger, a neutron star (NS) binary can produce roughly one of three different outcomes: (1) a stable NS, (2) a black hole (BH), or (3) a supra-massive, rotationally-supported NS, which then collapses to a BH following angular momentum losses. Which of these fates occur and in what proportion has important implications for the electromagnetic transient associated with the mergers and t...
